Gum Disease in Children: Symptoms

As you may know, gum disease is a serious problem that you should take appropriate steps to avoid. Sadly, there are many things you may have heard about gum disease that aren’t entirely correct. This could be especially true when it comes to your child—especially if you’ve been told that children are immune to gum disease.

You see, you may need to do a number of things if you’re hoping to help your child avoid gum disease. Of course, brushing and flossing are important, for children or for adults. However, children may not always be excited to brush. Still, you should help your little one brush their teeth and monitor their brushing once they’re old enough to brush on their own. You should also consider inspecting your little one’s mouth for common symptoms of gum disease, which include bleeding or sensitive gums.

Sadly, if your child does have gum disease, you may ultimately have to help them deal with a number of serious problems. In reality, if you aren’t able to prevent gum disease, your child’s gums may actually pull away from their teeth. This exposes their gums and can result in sensitive teeth. Gum disease could also eventually cause premature tooth loss because gum disease can break down your alveolar bone, which is the bone that keeps your teeth in place.

Luckily, there are a number of things you can do if you’re interested in helping your child treat gum disease. Of course, we recommend scheduling an appointment with our dentist in Coeur d'Alene .
